Introduction to Welding Inspection

Many features of the weld can be evaluated during welding inspection, some related to the size of welds, and others related to the presence of weld discontinuities.Weld discontinuities may also be important. Imperfections within or adjacent to the weld, which is or their size and / or depending on location, may not, meet your desired performance to prevent the weld. Typically, these discontinuities, the unacceptable size or location, is referred to as welding defects, and sometimes through lack of weld or weld through the premature failure can cause stress concentrations in welded components constructed.

Welds inspection can be conducted for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most fundamental reason to determine the weld quality is suitable for their intended application.

Weld quality acceptance criteria can originate from a number of sources. Print welding fabrication drawing / blue generally as the location of weld size and length and possibly other welding welds will provide dimensional information.

Acceptable and unacceptable levels or the amount of welding to inspect the weld discontinuities usually are welding codes and standards. Welding codes and welding standards have been developed for many types of construction applications. It is important that a welding standards that are included within specific industry or application in which you choose to use.

Welding inspection, welding inspector often from a knowledge may require a wide variety of welding drawings, welding symbols, weld joint design, welding procedures, codes and standards requirements and understanding of inspection and testing techniques to name a few. There are a number of welding inspection training courses and a number of welding inspector certification programs are internationally.

The most popular programs used in internationally, The Certified Welding Inspector Program (CWI) is administered by the American Welding Society (AWS)  and Certification Scheme for Welding Inspection Personnel (CSWIP)  is administered by The Welding Institute (TWI) UK. Certification as a Welding Inspector will need to demonstrate of an individual's knowledge of welding inspection normally passing through passing examination.

I have chosen the following topics provide an overview of this welding inspection:

  • Inspection and welding procedure qualification test - used to observe these requirements and the overall welding quality system may be an essential part of how.
  • Visual Inspection - often the easiest, least expensive, and perhaps, if performed correctly, the most effective way for many applications
  • Surface Crack Detection - Mothods such as liquid penetrant inspection and magnetic particle inspection
  • Non Destructive Testing (NDT) - Radiographic and Ultrasonic Weld Inspection methods are used typically to examine the internal structure of the weld in order to establish the weld's integrity without destroying the welded component
  • Destructive Weld Testing – Methods used to establish weld integrity or performance, typically through sectioning and/or breaking the welded component and evaluating various mechanical and or physical characteristics.

Key elements of a successful installation of a welding quality system, and a sound introduction to welding inspection program control. After the weld quality requirements / acceptance criteria, inspection and testing methods to be used for praise and full of suitably qualified and / or the availability of experienced welding inspectors complete evaluation of the program can be established.
